This course describes anthropogenic impacts on water in the landscape
and the application of ecosystem-based catchment management approaches. It
addresses various topics related to water management, including the importance
of water for society, aquatic ecosystems, human-induced landscape changes, the
impact of agriculture and forestry on catchment areas, functions of catchment
area management, protection and organization of catchment areas, sediment
management in streams and reservoirs, erosion control and flood control measures,
land-improvement facilities, rainwater management, stream modifications and
restorations, water retention, extreme events (floods and droughts), and
hydro-technical structures like dams, reservoirs, weirs, hydroelectric power
plants, and navigation canals.
